About This Book
AI Fundamentals is the textbook for the AI Fundamentals course at Osman Academy. Every student receives the printed book, and the same book, with the same sections, is available on the Osman Academy website. Its goal is to give you an accurate picture of artificial intelligence: what it is, how it works at a basic level, what it can and cannot do, and why human judgment remains essential.
This is not a prompting guide, a programming tutorial, or a certification study guide. Those subjects come later in the curriculum, as described at the end of this section. Here, we build the mental model that everything later depends on.
Who should read this book
This book is for anyone who wants to understand AI before relying on it. That includes complete beginners, people who use AI tools casually but want to know how they work, professionals and business leaders who need to judge AI claims with confidence, and students and educators looking for a conceptual foundation. It is also the first step for readers who plan to continue to AI Associate, AI Developer, or AI Architect.
Prerequisites
None. You do not need programming, mathematics, or any previous study of AI. Where other books would use code or equations, we use worked examples, tables, and diagrams.
How this book is organized: a roadmap
The book follows a simple idea: to understand artificial intelligence, we first need a clear baseline, and the best baseline we have is human intelligence. So the book moves in two stages, shown in the figure below. In stage 1, we study how people think, decide, connect, and build tools. In stage 2, we use that baseline to understand what AI is, how it learns, and where it falls short. Each chapter opens with this same map, with the current chapter highlighted, so you always know where you are.
Stage 1
Human Foundations
- 1The human question
- 2How humans think, feel, and decide
- 3How humans connect and judge
- 4Why humans work and build tools
- 5Where AI fits in the human story
Build the baseline: how people think, decide, connect, and build tools
Stage 2
AI Foundations
- 6What is artificial intelligence?
- 7Data and how machines learn
- 8Neural networks, LLMs, and generative AI
- 9Why AI appears smart and can be wrong
- 10Real AI systems and their limits
- 11Humans, work, and what comes next
Compare AI against that baseline: what it is, how it learns, where it fails
Stage 1, Human Foundations, has five chapters:
- Chapter 1 explains why the study of AI begins with human intelligence, and introduces the intelligence cycle that we use throughout the book.
- Chapter 2 looks inside the cycle: how perception, memory, reasoning, emotion, and judgment work together when a person makes a decision.
- Chapter 3 turns from individuals to groups: relationships, culture, institutions, and how people judge right from wrong.
- Chapter 4 covers why people work and the long human habit of building tools that extend our abilities.
- Chapter 5 places AI in that story, as something humans made, and shows where it sits among our other tools.
Stage 2, AI Foundations, has six chapters:
- Chapter 6 gives a working definition of AI and the main families of systems it covers.
- Chapter 7 explains what training data is and what "learning" means for a machine.
- Chapter 8 shows how neural networks, large language models, and generative AI relate to one another.
- Chapter 9 explains why AI can sound fluent and confident without understanding, and where that breaks down.
- Chapter 10 looks at how AI appears in real products, and what those systems still cannot do.
- Chapter 11 closes the book with how AI changes work and the judgment that stays with people.
Appendix A contains suggested answers to the exercises, and the glossary at the back of the book collects the key terms from every chapter.
How each chapter works
Every chapter opens with a short list of what it covers and the roadmap above. We then work through numbered sections (1.1, 1.2, and so on). Most ideas come with a numbered figure or table, and we often start with a small, everyday example before applying the idea more broadly. Some examples, such as the driver at a traffic light in chapter 1, come back in later chapters so that we can compare how a person and an AI system handle the same situation.
Along the way, you will find:
- Exercises placed right after the idea they practice. Try each one before reading on. Suggested answers are in appendix A.
- Side boxes with short asides that are useful but not essential.
- Notes that point to related chapters or flag a common misunderstanding.
Each chapter ends with a summary of its main points. New terms appear in italics where they are first explained.
Where this fits
AI Fundamentals is the first of four levels in the Osman Academy curriculum:
AI Fundamentals → AI Associate → AI Developer → AI Architect
This level is about understanding AI. The later levels cover applying AI to professional work (AI Associate), building AI-enabled applications (AI Developer), and designing production AI systems (AI Architect).
The word fundamentals matters here. The fundamentals of a subject are its essential principles and concepts: how it works, why it works, and how its parts relate to one another. Studying the fundamentals does not mean studying everything. It means building a reliable framework that makes everything you learn later easier to understand, evaluate, and apply.
By the end of this book, you should be able to:
- Explain what AI is without relying on technical jargon.
- Distinguish AI from conventional software.
- Describe how data, training, and models are related.
- Explain how machine learning, neural networks, large language models, and generative AI relate to one another.
- Explain why a confident answer from an AI system may still be incorrect.
- Distinguish an AI model from a complete AI system.
- Identify appropriate and inappropriate expectations of AI.
- Discuss how AI can change tasks and workflows.
- Explain why humans remain responsible for consequential decisions.
